Historical Perspctives Departments and Institutes established
The University
Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) was established 600 years ago on the current
site in Seoul as the first institution of higher learning, founded by King
Taejo of Chosun Dynasty. The meaning of Sungkyunkwan is an "institution for
building a harmonious society" of "perfect human being". For over 500 years
from its foundation Sungkyunkwan had been the center for the promotion of
Confucianism and the cradle of most of the distinguished scholars and
statesmen in Chosun Dynasty. Presently, it becomes the campus for
Humanities and Social Sciences in Seoul. In 1978 a modern campus for
natural sciences and engineering was constructed in Suwon, about 30 miles
south from the Seoul campus. In 1996 SKKU started to be governed by Samsung
Group
for its running.
